The History of Our Organization

Hi Everyone,

This week I had the pleasure of spending time with Dr. Lawrence P. Kaplan, Founder of the US Autism Association, and Dr. Phillip C. DeMio, one of the organizations first contributing members. Their story began with a shared lunch focused on talking about two young sons who were both profoundly affected by their autism, which evolved into the story of two dads determined to use their experience with their own sons to help others. This ultimately became the origin story for us all at US Autism.

Both brilliant men with now dependent adult sons that continue to rely on them every day for basic self-care, their story, and the wisdom these two men bring, reminds me how heroic the autism journey really is for so many individuals, family members, and the educators and professionals who have dedicated their life’s work to this cause. With nothing better to add, I’ll simply close this post by telling you ALL how deeply blessed I feel to be surrounded by so many, who as Dr. Kaplan stated, “just did what needed to be done.” Thank you! You are all my heroes and I can only hope to serve you well.

With My Sincere Appreciation,

Marlo Thurman

US Autism President
